The Benefits of Being a Tutor

After retiring from a career in healthcare, I am now tutoring a lovely lady from the Ukraine.  She was an RN in her country and has a goal of working here in the US as a nurse.

She must demonstrate (by passing exams) not only fluency in the English language but also in English medical terminology.  She is such a joy to work with!  She is smart and motivated and as she puts it, “This is now my home country.  I must contribute.  I must work, I need a job.”

But what I had not considered when I signed up to tutor were the benefits I would receive.  I have not only gained a new friend, but our conversations remind me of how much I have to be grateful for.  Our interactions remind me to be more empathetic, less judgmental, and, I hope, a more understanding person.

It is proving to be a very enjoyable experience.
