LCUP’s 4th Annual Essay Contest Winners 2013!
Third Place: Teresa Pena (Teresa could not make the breakfast due to work obligations so Tutor Gary Richey, Jr. accepted on her behalf. Thank you Gary!)
Congratulations to everyone! Well done!
A panel of three judges (Phyllis Gorshe, Director of the Dunedin Public Library, Opal Hamm and Marian Ligon, LCUP Board Emeritus Members) evaluated the essays and came to a consensus ranking first, second, and third place winners. The primary focus of the judging was on content rather than grammar or mechanics such as punctuation or spelling.
The winners of the contest were announced Mon, Sept 23 and recognized at the LCUP Volunteer Celebration Event, a Pancake Breakfast at Honeymoon Pavilion held the morning of Sat, Sept 28, 2013. Awards were: 1st place $100 prize, 2nd place $50 prize, and 3rd place $25 prize in both the student and tutor categories.
The contest is an excellent motivator to practice writing, a critical element in everyone‘s definition of literacy. It‘s also fun to compete for recognition and PRIZES! Perhaps more than anything, the contest provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how literacy tutoring, as students and tutors, has enhanced our lives.
